Good Sleep

If you always do what you’ve always done you’ll always get what you’ve always got.

And if you always go to sleep at night filled with a sense of amazement and gratitude that you spent the day doing something worthy of your own self respect, you’ll always get a great night’s sleep.

That raises the interesting question about “what’s hard work.” Because hard work, meaning work you pump out without heart and soul in it, is just bad management.

Imagine a carrot farmer and he lives and breathes on the growth and sale of his best of breed carrots. However, on this day he says “maybe sitting in a cafe in Bondi Beach reading “gone with the wind” is a healthy thing to do.” Then, after that, he goes down the beach for a swim, a snorkel, paddles his kayak around the heads of Sydney, then meets some friends to share lunch and after that does yoga and then walks five kilometres to the ferry and goes home. Suddenly he can’t sleep and yet, his day was so full and physically demanding.

What would you advise this carrot farmer who wants to maintain the best of breed in his carrots growing? Would you tell him to sit behind the computer on facebook more? Or publish more photos on Instagram more? Or do a longer yoga practice? Or sit in the cafe longer? Or pray harder at church on Sunday?

Or would you tell the carrot farmer to get his priorities right? To do everything he already does but shrink the time he spends doing fluff and more time working on his beloved carrots? It seems this analogy might be considered by many people to be trivial. But is it?

When a business person comes to me to talk about their success it is never ever because they are incapable of world class performance in their arena. No – usually the people who come to see me are world class in their field, but forgot it. They want world class results, they want to deliver the absolute best “carrots” in their market, but they spend 99% of their time doing other things.

This brings us to the word presence. A word you’ll hear me say over and over and over. Presence. Which means “be here” in this moment of time. And there’s more. It means “be here in this moment of time doing something that raises your self worth.” That’s the kicker. You see, if you are present sitting in the garden sunbaking then that’s fabulous, but when you go inside and need sugar or a drink of beer or yogurt or something, it’s not a random appetite. When you do things that lower your self worth, even fun things that you think are good to do, you attract calamity, disaster and humbling circumstances. Why?

When we reach out for things (I call them the four substitutes: stomach, greed, sex, spiritual) to fund our diminishing self worth, we reach out for things that eventually burn our fingers. The appetites of the stomach, greed, sex and spiritual are essential appetites and for a balanced person, those are simple life needs. But for the person who is spending their time on low priority activities, these appetites are their way of “topping up” the tank, and they just lead to brick walls.

The stomach appetites when aligned with low self worth activities leads to fat bum, bloated belly and visceral fat. The greed appetite leads to stress and panic, making extremely short term decisions and lack of intuition, the sex appetite leads to car accidents and all sorts of choices that are a self feeding mess, and finally, the spiritual appetite which, when in a healthy place leads to the awareness of a vision and purpose greater than self, but when used to counteract low priority, self worth lowering lifestyle time choices (see the carrot farmer above), is used to create fulfilment without worthy activity, in other words, delusion.

Here’s a formula for your day that can refine how you act in alignment with your self worth.

1. What do I want to achieve this year with my work?

2. How do I get that – a list of actions that would cause it?

3. Who do I need to associate with to cause it?

4. Where do I need to be to action that?

5. What are my excuses, distractions, emotions, pains, worries, anxieties, that I use to avoid 1,2,3,4.

I’m saying that if a person doesn’t spend their day working on what would cause 1.2.3.4 then they will not sleep well no matter what pill or drink or food they take to try to overcome their self depreciating behaviour and no matter how wonderful those self depreciating behaviours feel, they will, by not living in harmony with their purpose, nature and the universe, start a fight they cannot win.

So, sleep comes when the day is spent doing, with presence and love, what ever it takes to create your desired outcomes – and please don’t talk about recuperation time. Recuperation time is only used for those who still live the work life balance model, and we know that doesn’t work, no matter how many holidays the work life balance brigade has, they’re burnt out 10 minutes after they return because they even burn out on holiday.

Finally, presence, meaning the absence of emotion which is love, inspiration and purpose can only be of value if that presence is aligned with doing high priority actions that link to and build your VIP (vision, inspiration and purpose)
